20 Years: The History of LINKS Magazine |
||
|
A little more than 20 years ago, Mark Brown saw a need for a golf
magazine that would capture the true spirit of the game. It wouldn't be a
publication offering tips on how to cure your slice or add 10 yards to your
drives. Nor would it report on what happed on the previous week's tour
event.
Instead, this magazine would be for the community of serious players who share a passion for the best of golf, the way it was meant to be played. Headquartered in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where it remains, the magazine started out regionally as Southern Links. Beginning with the first issue, which included a profile of Haig Point, an interview with Gary Player and a column by Ben Wright on the growth of worldwide golf, the magazine was targeted to a sophisticated audience that appreciated the game's traditions and long history. Western Links began in 1991 before the two titles merged in 1993 to form LINKS, with a national subscription base. Since then, LINKS has grown to publish seven issues a year plus the Premier Properties Guide, the oldest, most comprehensive and most authoritative publication devoted to private golf-community living. A stellar list of names has written for the magazine over the years. Contributors have included Jack Whitaker, Dick Taylor, Ben Wright, Jim Nantz, George Peper, John Updike, Sandy Tatum, Tom Doak, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els. Owned by Purcell Enterprises, LINKS is on the leading edge of trends
and issues that pertain to the golf lifestyle, with a mission of bringing
the most engaging, sophisticated and surprising content to its audience
of While much has changed about the magazine—and the game—over 20 years, LINKS' primary purpose has not. With every issue, LINKS strives to help readers enjoy the game that they love. |
