Nothing gets the golf juices going like the Masters, the unofficial start of the season for generations of golfers. This year’s tournament is even extra special with the 25th anniversary of the best one ever—“Jack’s Masters.”
But because the event has become the most popular golf tournament in the world and the course is on the top of everyone’s must-play list, you sometimes get the sense that Augusta National is the only great layout in the area, but that’s far from the case. There are a number of excellent clubs around the city and over the border in Aiken, S.C., that share Augusta’s rolling topography and pine tree-lined fairways.
And even though all but one on our list are private, most open their doors to outsiders Masters week, albeit at steep greens fees and hard-to-get tee times. For most of us, getting on one of the ten courses that follow is about as close as we’ll get to playing Augusta National.
