3. Ben Hogan, 1950

Just 16 months after a near fatal car accident, Hogan used his indomitable will (and a collapsible chair in between shots) to overcome his many injuries, not to mention long odds, to win at Merion. First he had to survive a 36-hole finale on Saturday, immortalized by Hy Peskin’s famous photograph of Hogan hitting a 1-iron into the 72nd hole, and then return the next day to beat George Fazio and Lloyd Mangrum in a playoff. It is simply one of the greatest and most inspiring feats in the history of sports.
