6. Jack Nicklaus, 1962

With his first professional victory at Oakmont, 22-year-old Nicklaus became the first man since Bobby Jones to simultaneously hold the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open titles. He defeated hometown favorite Arnold Palmer, who won the Masters earlier that year, in a playoff, starting one of the game’s greatest rivalries and launching the reign of the Golden Bear.
