8. Johnny Miller, 1973

Some sports records stand the test of time, like Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak and Miller’s 63 in the final round at Oakmont.  Others have equaled it in major championships, but no one has surpassed it. Miller was paired with Arnold Palmer in the first two rounds and entered the final round trailing by six shots with the likes of Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, Trevino, and Weiskopf ahead of him.  But he made nine birdies and one bogey during the final 18 to leapfrog them all and capture the first of his two major championships.
