9. Payne Stewart, 1999

Looking to avenge his loss to Lee Janzen at Olympic the year before, Stewart put on one of the greatest displays of putting in major-championship history in the final round at Pinehurst. He needed just 24 putts, including clutch one-putts on each of the final three holes. But triumph turned to tragedy four months later when he was killed in a plane crash, along with five others, stunning the golf community and reminding us all how fleeting life can be.
