Few people have had as interesting a golf life as our intrepid editor, George Peper. Anyone who has read his columns in LINKS, on LINKSMagazine.com, or his many books would love to have a few minutes to pick his brain. Well, here's your chance. In our new weekly series, "Ask George," you can peper Peper with queries big and small.
Have you played golf with Bill Murray recently?
--Stan, Pheonix, Ariz.
No, I’m afraid we’ve sort of lost touch since the days when we were neighbors and members of the same golf club and co-wrote Cinderella Story. (By the way “co-wrote” is not the right word—Bill did 100% of it himself, I was just an editorial caddie.) But I had some terrific times with him on the golf course, including his debut in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am when he and I played in a group with pros John Adams and Bart Bryant. That first year the tournament organizers didn’t realize what a goldmine they had in Bill, and they put us in the non-star rotation, meaning we played Spyglass on Saturday when all the big names were at Pebble. But when they saw that Bill was drawing the biggest galleries on the peninsula, they woke up. The next year, he was in the heart of the A group while yours truly remained where I belonged, among a cadre of kindred invisibles. That suited me fine—whereas the more people who follow Bill the better he plays, I’m exactly the opposite. I may have introduced Bill to the AT&T—something that was good for both of them, but in return I got to tag along and play in ten Pro-Ams and those were ten of the greatest weeks of my life, so the biggest winner was yours truly.
