Baltusrol Golf Club

Springfield, N.J.

After losing a tough campaign for governor of California in 1962, Richard Nixon moved to New York City and joined this historic club with its two Tillinghast courses that have played host to numerous majors. Six years later he met with prominent Republicans at Baltusrol to plan his run for the White House, but he had to resign from the club in 1968 after winning the Republican nomination because of the club’s discriminatory practices then. He is reported to have been very bitter that the press coverage forced him to resign.
