Chambers Bay, No. 12

LOCATION University Place, Wash.
ARCHITECT Robert Trent Jones Jr.
With the massive 12,000-square-foot green located in a bowl that sits well above the tee, the hole offers a blind target for players choosing to hit driver off the tee. Perfectly suited for a television broadcast, the hole offers great theater because viewers can follow the ball as it rolls along the green’s slopes while the players can’t. Here, the availability of options, the cornerstone of great match-play holes, extends to putting. Players can handle seemingly impossible putts by utilizing the slopes at the edges of the green.
