The kitchen opens onto a cozy sitting area, the couch facing a massive built-in bookcase (with TV/VCR) and bar. This is where, for the last several years, I've stayed up until midnight to watch the conclusion of U.S. golf tournaments. In the windowed alcove to the rear is a door. Walk through it, take six big steps, and you're standing on the 18th fairway of the Old Course.
