TaylorMade believes there are two types of golfers: the tactician who likes to
position the ball, and the bomber who just wants to let it rip. So they have
come out with a driver for each: the moveable-weight r7 SuperQuad for the
former and the high-MOI Burner for the latter. The clubs perform similarly and you won’t go wrong with either driver, but our low-handicap
testers give the Burner a slight nod for the excitement factor. Like
other high-MOI drivers, the Burner’s shape departs from the norm, although its
sleek, elongated crown isn’t so unconventional. With a longer
(46 inches), lighter (50 grams) shaft, the Burner is built with pure speed in
mind.
“I normally have trouble with a longer shaft,” says a 6, “but the
Burner was really forgiving and the ball jumped off the club. Plus, the look
gave me plenty of confidence to go after it.”
The 460cc SuperQuad,
which features four weight ports and a 45-inch, 65-gram shaft, delivers just as
well as its smaller predecessors. “I love my r7 425,” says a 3, “but I would
switch to this in a heartbeat. It’s got a bit more horespower.”
To continue
the analogy, going from the 425 to the SuperQuad is like trading up for the
next-level Lexus, while hitting the Burner offers more thrills—like driving a
Porsche.
