It’s cool to be square these days, from the billionaire geeks who control Silicon Valley to Nate Silver, the numbers guru at fivethirtyeight.com, to the clubs in your golf bag.Square is the new black, and Callaway’s FT-i Squareway woods are as incredibly accurate as their big brother, the boxy FT-i driver. Fusion technology seamlessly combines a stainless steel face, sole and body with a carbon composite crown, giving Callaway engineers discretionary weight to place in the extreme corners. The result: super-high moment of inertia that promotes long, high, straight shots.
Callaway claims the Squareway is the company’s most forgiving fairway wood, and the 3-wood's performance, especially off the tee, from our low-handicap testers (2–7) gives little reason to dispute the statement. Testing showed a great combination of launch and spin for a carry distance that rivaled that of drivers, making the Squareway a great option for getting off the tee. (In addition to the 3-wood, the Squareway also comes in 5- and 7-woods.)
The only caveat: The oversize head can make hitting the 3-wood off tight fairway lies a bit tricky. Be sure to practice with it first to get used to the new shape of golf.
