King Cobra Baffler DWS

The evolution of the hybrid continues with this latest easy-to-hit club

By: Tom Cunneff

The King Cobra Baffler, which came out in 1975, was the first utility wood on the market. More than 30 years later, the idea has evolved into the Baffler DWS, which has one of the largest clubfaces of any hybrid. Along with the large hitting area, the shape inspires plenty of confidence at address—the 23-degree model almost looked like a 7-iron, according to one tester.

Cobra Hybrid Golf ClubsThanks to heel-toe back weights that are 18 percent larger than those of the previous version, the ball flew like a 7-iron as well, launching high and landing softly. “Even thin shots had a nice trajectory,” says a 16. “And it works great from all sorts of lies—fairway, rough, hardpan, sand. I even hit some good chips with it.”

MSRP: $175 (six lofts, 16–29 degrees)
