FootJoy FJ Icon

Replacing the iconic Classics atop the FootJoy pyramid, the leading shoemaker has introduced a new Icon

By: Tom Cunneff

One of the things that attracted me to golf was the sound of metal spikes on concrete. Who cared if those old models weighed as much as construction boots and the spikes damaged both greens and clubhouse floors? Alas, time—not to mention golf shoe technology—marches on.

Replacing the mighty Classics line, which had a 50-year run, FootJoy's FJ Icon is the newest flagship product of the company that is nearly synonymous with golf shoes. The Icon is the first product in the company’s 100-year history to combine the best features from its other categories: aesthetics, fit, support and resistance to water and stretching.

First introduced at the Players Championship and now popular on tour, the Icon has at least 12 different enhancements, such as a leather-covered “Fit-Bed” that closely mimics the natural shape of the foot and the “Icon Torque Bar” in the outsole shank area to improve midfoot stability and support.

What's more, through Footjoy's "MyJoys" program, you can customize the 10 different styles from among nearly 100 different leathers. You can even add the logo of your favorite sport’s team.

So if you want the best of traditional craftsmanship and style with modern technology, you can't do any better than an Icon. The only feature missing is that nostalgic clackety-clack sound.
