Scott Verplank has played with the same Ping Anser putter for most of his professional life so it was bit shocking when he changed to a new putter, the Kia Ma Daytona Ghost, during the middle of the Travelers Championship last week. The switch paid off. He wound up firing a 64 in the final round before losing to Bubba Watson in a playoff.
That Ghost version isn’t available just yet but the mallet model Justin Rose used to win at the Memorial a few weeks ago is (he also dominated with it for 54 holes at the Travelers before fading on Sunday). Designed with input from the tour’s hottest putting guru, Dave Stockton, the Rossa Corza Ghost is made to be very easy to aim and get the ball rolling on the intended line. The white head clearly stands out when placed on the green, and TaylorMade says the maximum contrast stimulates the retina making it easier to focus and square up the leading edge at address. The three black lines on the crown, which frame the ball perfectly in the middle of the face, also aid with alignment, as does the circular hole in the back of the head .
Being a mallet, the Corza Ghost has a high moment of inertia so it’s very stable on off-center hits. It also features an insert with 14 polymer-filled grooves in the face that help promote topspin for a smoother roll.
In addition to Verplank’s blade, a mid-mallet model will also be available in July.
