Titleist Pro V1/Pro V1x

After an extensive overhaul, the most popular balls in golf now perform better than ever

By: Tom Cunneff

First introduced in the fall of 2000, the Titleist Pro V1 ball is one of the most popular, most successful products in golf history. Nearly 10 years after its debut, Titleist has introduced the latest version of the tour-level Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

The biggest changes in the three-piece 2009 Pro V1 are a larger core for a softer feel and more distance, a thinner casing layer for more spin around the greens and a more durable cover.

The four-piece, dual-core Pro V1x has been similarly re-engineered inside and out in order to produce better launch conditions and more distance off the tee, especially for longer players. And like the Pro V1, it is more durable.

Put it all together, and both models do it all, exactly the way a tour ball is supposed to perform: They are long off the tee, very durable and have great playing characteristics into and around the greens.

After being mired in patent-infringement lawsuits for the past couple of years, Titleist is ready to regain its luster in the golf-ball market. While only tour pros have been playing the Pro V1 and Pro V1x since the beginning of the year, both models are now available everywhere.
