Tom Watson Instructional DVD

The three-hour, two-disc set from the eight-time major champion covers all facets of the game

By: Tom Cunneff

Perhaps Tom Watson’s age-defying play of late—almost winning the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry, opening with a 67 at Augusta this year—is just a brilliant marketing ploy for his new DVD, “Lessons of a Lifetime.” (The subtitle should be “Teaching the Young Kids a Thing or Two.”)

Tee to green, Watson’s game is good as it ever was. Actually, his swing is even better today than it was in his heyday in the ‘80s when he had a pronounced “reverse-C” finish. In Chapter 9, he discusses when he had his modern-swing epiphany, which came on the range at Harbour Town in 1994 after a particularly poor practice round. Tired of hitting the ball "into right field" and toe-deep divots, he thought of Corey Pavin’s over-the-top practice swing and discovered his “secret” of turning his shoulders perpendicular to his spine angle.

What really helped me was his crystal-clear lesson on the takeaway, something I’ve always struggled with as far as the proper path and amount of wrist cock. Tom’s advice: maintain the angle the club shaft and left arm make at address as you start the club away with your left hand, forearm and shoulder. Previously, I let the clubhead drop as I started the backswing, which made it difficult to get the proper wrist-cock.

The first 16 lessons cover the full swing, while the other 28 segments cover shot making and the short-game, including punch shots, long bunker shots and putting in the wind. He also travels to Pebble Beach and shows you how to play the famous downhill chip he made at the par-3 17th that won him the 1982 U.S. Open.

Shot at the Greenbrier Resort, where Watson is the professional emeritus, “Lessons” has very polished production values thanks to producer/director Terry Jastrow, a seven-time Emmy winner during his years as head of ABC’s golf coverage from 1974-1995. He even dusts off the great introductory music he used during some of those years, Barry White's disco instrumental “Love’s Theme” with its cool wah-wah guitar. Almost makes you long for a pair of Sansabelt slacks. Almost.

There's nothing old fashioned about Watson or his game, though. His “Lessons” are as relevant today as they ever were, perhaps even more so.
