Golf is the most individual of games, which makes it perfect for creating rivalries like the one that connected Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer for decades. But golf architecture sometimes requires different viewpoints to make for the best designs, and even longtime rivals have been known to come together to meld their best ideas.

Such was the case for Nicklaus and Palmer when building the King & Bear, their only design collaboration. Nicklaus also teamed up with Pete Dye to design this week's tour stop, Harbour Town.

In this spirit, we celebrate these and 16 other courses borne out of one-time collaborations between renowned architects. Of course, golf architecture has also seen some pretty good long-term partnerships, like Coore-Crenshaw, Macdonald-Raynor and Thomas-Bell. We'll save those courses for another week.
