At the 2003 Colonial, Annika Sorenstam teed it up with the men, proving how well women could compete on the course. Now, as a golf architect, she is showing that women can also design courses.

Sorenstam's work is the latest in a long history of women's contributions to golf course architecture, dating back to pioneer Ida Dixon, who designed the Springhaven Club in 1904.

Since then, women have left some indelible marks on the golf landscape. In fact, a pair of women can lay claim to two of the most famous holes in golf: Marion Hollins' surf-crashing 16th at Cypress Point and Alice Dye's island-green 17th at TPC Sawgrass, site of the Players Championship.

Fittingly, the tournament ends on Mother's Day, and in honor of that special holiday, we bring you a list of the top 18 female course designers.
