Bethpage State Park (Black), No. 4

LOCATION Farmingdale, N.Y.
ARCHITECT A.W. Tillinghast
PAR 5
YARDAGE 517
A mid-hole cross bunker was one of Tillinghast’s favorite design stratagems. These visually intimidating features put a lot of pressure on the tee shot, especially in match-play situations that were often prevalent in his thinking. Rees Jones likes to say Bethpage was Tillinghast’s answer to Pine Valley. If so, this bunker is Tillie’s version of Hell’s Half Acre, which guards the 7th at Pine Valley.
