Franklin D. Roosevelt
(1933–1945)

FDR didn’t play a single round while in office because he was paralyzed from the waist down from what was thought to be polio. But when he was younger, he was a good player who teed it up as often as he could at the family’s summer home on Campobello Island, Maine, and in Washington while he was assistant secretary of the Navy. As President, Roosevelt’s greatest golf legacy to was the building of many courses as part of his public-works projects, the most notable of which was Bethpage Black, the site of this year’s U.S. Open.
