A large part of the appeal of Augusta National and Pine Valley, two of the most coveted invites in golf, is the courses, much admired, copied and borrowed from over the years. But there is no reproducing the other part of these clubs’ allure: prestige, exclusivity and an aura of mystery. And so it is that Pine Valley edges ahead—while Augusta hosts the world every spring so anyone with a TV can describe the holes, only those who have been to PV can know why the left, original 9th green plays harder than the alternate.
