It may not scream “5-star,” but make no mistake, Pine Needles, under the guidance of LPGA legend Peggy Kirk Bell, has over the decades introduced more women to the game than any other resort in the nation. The resort’s centerpiece is a classic Donald Ross-designed course with all his trademarks, notably wide fairways and inverted saucer greens. Pine Needles has hosted three U.S. Women’s Opens, but for the recreational player the course is a sheer delight from the forward tees. Ladies Golfaris, pioneered by Bell, offer four to five days of women-only golf instruction (and camaraderie) that set the pace in the industry. Accommodations in the chalet-style lodges are rustic, and there is no spa on the premises, but Pine Needles has a laid-back elegance all its own. Guests also have playing privileges at Mid Pines, another superb Ross-designed course right across the street.
