Ever the politician, Nixon took up golf seriously while he was Vice President to curry favor with his boss, Dwight Eisenhower. Hampered by a lack of talent, Nixon approached golf in a studious, serious, at times grim way, as if it were a homework assignment and not a game. Especially during his second term, Nixon’s attention was focused on the issues of the time—Vietnam, Watergate—leaving him little time to play, even on the private three-hole course that friends had built for him at Nixon’s home in San Clemente, California.
