St. Augustine, Fla.

Founded by the Spanish in 1565 and the oldest permanent settlement in America, this quaint town comes alive at the holidays. During “Nights of Lights,” the 144-square-block historic district, its brick-paved streets bordered by centuries-old buildings, twinkles with two million tiny white lights. The display, now in its 20th year, has been extended to Feb. 2, 2014. Eight miles away is 36-hole World Golf Village and the World Golf Hall of Fame.
