In his preliminary plans, Pete Dye had designed most of the holes to nestle in the dunes with few views of the Atlantic, but his wife, Alice, suggested making the ocean visible from as many holes as possible for a more enjoyable round. Pete took her advice and raised every fairway by six feet so players could have a view of the Atlantic from just about every hole. The change, however, made the course much more vulnerable to the unpredictable winds.
