U.S. Open

Ardmore, Pa.

With a final round score of even-par 70, Englishman Justin Rose recorded a 72-hole score of 281, one over par, to win the our National Championship at historic Merion Golf Club outside Philadelphia. Rose, claiming his first major, finished two shots ahead of Jason Day and Phil Mickelson, but the real victor was the narrow, difficult East Course laid out by Hugh Wilson in 1914. The compact layout was tweaked by the USGA to present a stringent test to the game’s best players. Cool, wet conditions made the 6,996-yard course, hosting its seventh U.S. Open, play much longer.
