The Hole: No. 13
The canvas for the 13th hole is bordered to the south by the
Westhaven community, to the east by a tree-lined gravel farm lane, to the west
by the 11th and 12th holes, and to the north by Boyd Mill Pike, which cuts
through the course.
The location of the suggested tee complex is on a
gently sloping hillside. The first half of the hole plays along a right-to-left
slope of about five percent in gradient. The distance from the suggested back
tee location to the landing area of the dogleg is approximately 300
yards. From the dogleg to the green, the land rises approximately 20 feet
along a distance of 140 yards (five percent uphill gradient). The slope beyond
the green continues to run uphill. A variety of mature trees borders the back of
the suggested greensite. The setting for the 13th is ideally suited for a golf
hole. The existing topography should be used as carefully as possible to
incorporate the hole’s strategy and beauty.
The available space for
the 13th hole suggests a par 4. The course routing for the back nine currently
includes two par 3s, holes 15 and 16, and two par 5s, holes 14 and 17.
The overriding goal for the design should be to fit the hole into the
context and character of the Westhaven community and the current golf course
design. Timeless and bold architecture should be the precedent. Beauty and
strategic shot values need to be the guiding principles.
