Dataw
Island, located just outside historic Beaufort, South Carolina—between Hilton
Head Island and Charleston, has long been a hidden gem among the exquisite
coastal islands set along the South Carolina coast. First developed nearly 20 years ago by
Alcoa, this private golf club community offers superlative golf, a wide range of
water sports, excellent club facilities and gracious homes, all in the casual
lifestyle and abundant, natural beauty indigenous to the Lowcountry.
Dataw Island has been named among
the top choices in the nation for retirement living by several national
publications. Most recently, it was
recognized as one of “America’s 100 Best Master-Planned Communities” by Where to
Retire magazine, cited specifically for its design, sense of community and
closeness to the Lowcountry environment.
Golf: Golf at Dataw Island
is not so much a passion as it is a way of life. Here there are two beautiful and
challenging courses with tee time to fit your schedule.
The first golf course created at
Dataw Island is Cotton Dike.
Designed by the artful hand of Tom Fazio, the course is built over
terrain, which was coaxed from the marshes by a series of dikes originally
intended to create more land for Sea Island cotton fields. Almost half of the 18 holes lie along
the marsh and Jenkins Creek, wonderfully showcasing the Lowcountry’s natural
beauty.
Shortly after Cotton Dike was completed, construction of the
Morgan River course began. It is
still regarded as one of the great showcases of Arthur Hill’s talent. Narrower
than Cotton Dike, the Morgan River course demands accuracy, but well rewards
discipline. Its beauty is dramatic; breaks in the stands of ancient oaks lining
the holes create frames of the Morgan River and the sweeping salt marshes
beyond.

Homes & Homesites: While developer property
at Dataw is close to sell-out, a renewed interest in the rural charm and beauty
of the Beaufort area has once again made the community an appealing choice as a
primary or second home community.
It remains one of the best values for a gated community in the
Lowcountry, with homesites from the mid-$50s to $650,000 and resale homes
ranging from $250,000 to $1 million plus.
