If the third time is the charm, Charleston, South Carolina, has cornered the market. For the third consecutive year, the historic city has been named the #1 U.S. City by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards, which recognizes the world’s leading travel brands and best cities.
This year’s recognition was especially sweet. Condé Nast Traveler had a record-breaking nearly 80,000 readers participate in the survey, close to double the number of survey takers in 2012. These dedicated travelers cast 1.3 million votes for more than 16,000 properties around the world.
Charleston—which is big on charm, but not size—outranked major metropolitan destinations such as Paris, New York, and Sydney “because great cities combine exceptional qualities, they do not have to be big to score big,” writes Condé Nast Traveler.
Golfers won’t find a more hospitable location to visit. Stroll its historic streets, sample its sensational restaurants and watering holes, and relax at its sun-soaked beaches, and you’ll agree. You’ll also recognize some of the great golf offerings in the 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards. The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort (#4) and Wild Dunes Resort (#16) are ranked in the Top 20 Resorts in the South list.
This golf-rich destination has an array of course choices (20) as exceptional as the breathtaking coastal setting. From the oceanside finishing holes at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island and the Links Course at Wild Dunes Resort to the scenic marshland visits of Charleston National Country Club, you’ll find plenty of options to satisfy your golf desires.
