Celtic Manor had a bumpy start to its moment in the limelight, with soaking rains testing the Twenty Ten course's drainage (and, famously, the U.S. team's rain gear) to the breaking point. A highly engineered modern course, the Twenty Ten nevertheless boasts nice views of the Usk River valley and the ancient Roman village of Caerleon. The golf is heavily geared toward risk-reward play, with the par-five eighteenth a prime example. After a good drive, players must decide whether to go for it or lay up short of the stream that fronts the green. Like the 15th at Augusta National, anything a fraction short or carrying too much spin will trundle downhill into a watery grave.
