Deacon’s Lodge

Breezy Point, Minn.

Given free rein on a 500-acre parcel in the Brainerd Lakes area, a site marked by three large lakes, steep bluffs, expansive wetlands, and a thick forest of birch and pine, Palmer built a first-class resort course named for his father. To create waste bunkers, the site’s five-inch layer of rich loam was peeled back to expose a sand base that’s up to 170 feet in places. With each hole dropped into its own wooded corridor, Deacon’s Lodge is Palmer’s paean to Pine Valley, though five sets of well-placed tees give everyone a chance on this north woods masterpiece.
