Stanford University
Stanford, Calif.
Although most of George C. Thomas’ best works—Los Angeles Country Club, Riviera, Ojai Valley—are in Southern California, he ventured north with design associate Billy Bell Sr. to build Stanford’s 6,869-yard layout, which opened in 1930. Located in the foothills, the Stanford has plenty of elevation changes and on a clear day, it is possible to see San Francisco, 30 miles to the north.
