4. Mohonk Golf Course

Just 90 minutes north of New York City, the nine-hole Mohonk layout is one of the oldest courses in the U.S., dating from 1887. More than 120 years later, the course does its part in protecting the spectacular lake setting of the Mohonk Mountain House resort. An extensive composting program at the resort converts food waste into fertilizer on the golf course. The irrigation schedule is controlled by flow-control software to minimize pump-run times and conserve fuel.
