Just 20 miles north of Chicago, North Shore has been practicing environmental stewardship since the ’80s when it created its first natural, out-of-play area. It was a radical idea back then, when most courses were maintained from fence line to fence line. Today the course is full of landscape diversification that attracts wildlife. Opened in 1924 and designed by Harry S. Colt, Charles Alison and Alister MacKenzie, North Shore also has a water-quality program that utilizes organic plants to help balance out the water column in its ponds. But perhaps its most impressive initiative is its communication program: a Google Earth “fly-over tour” of the course’s environmental value, which you can access here.
