This is a difficult course for me to assess fairly because I had done a layout for the same site in trying to
get the job. (Unfortunately, I’m neither Australian nor the winner of the Open
Championship, so the two design commissions went to Greg Norman and to Peter
Thomson.) I was certain the site should produce one of the world’s top 100
courses, but there is not quite the great variety of holes for that, and the
undulating beauty of the property, which I liken to St. Andrews with a view, has
been obscured by bands of rough between the fairways. Especially at the finish,
the designers put championship difficulty ahead of the enjoyment of the members. Rating: 7 (July 2001)
