Overshadowed by better-promoted links courses in Scotland and Ireland, England boasts a superb roster of seaside venues that belong on every serious player’s bucket list. Royal Lytham & St. Annes, an epic test on the Lancashire coast pockmarked with more than 200 pot bunkers, will receive plenty of attention as host of the 2012 Open Championship. But other, less heralded coastal regions in the country brim with historic, fascinating links, several of “Royal” designation. All have the requisite sand hills, springy turf, and salty breezes prized by connoisseurs of the bump-and-run.
