St. Andrews (Old Course)

No. 17, Par Four

The cradle of the game has many quirky holes upon its ancient rumpled links. The most notorious of them is No. 17, the Road Hole, a terrifying two-shotter that probably has shredded more scorecards than any hole in existence. After a blind drive over facsimile sheds, golfers must figure out how to approach the long, narrow, tabletop green. This elusive target is wedged between a paved lane on the right and a murderous pot bunker to the left that’s been enlarged and deepened as part of a recent course makeover.
