The world of golf had been waiting patiently for rising star Rickie Fowler to enter the winner’s circle, and the dapper 23-year-old, after several near misses, finally delivered against a world-class field at the Quail Hollow Club. Tied after 72 holes with Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points, Fowler bombed his drive on the difficult par-four 18th, lofted a superb wedge shot to within four feet of the front left pin, and drained the putt for birdie to claim victory. Quail Hollow, designed by Tom Fazio, is a rolling, wooded layout where McIlroy won his first PGA Tour event in 2010.
