Feature: Flying High Jet-setting private golf communities are making business and vacation travel easier with this trendsetting amenity
By Scott Kauffman Remington Ranch, a private community in Bend, Oregon, offers all the amenities discerning property owners have come to expect: Tom Doak-designed course, fitness and spa facilities, plus another that is becoming more in demand, a private jet. “I think it’s very appealing to a lot of people who can live and work in today’s business climate and telecommute to and from different homes,” says Remington Ranch project manager Chris Pippin of the community’s Hawker 600. “Or maybe they want to take the jet to Bandon Dunes for a golf trip. It’s less than 30 minutes as opposed to five hours by car.” More and more, as communities are being built far from population centers and commercial airports, both owners and prospective buyers are looking for easier, quicker ways to get to and from these properties. Some communities have more than one jet. Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, California, offers a fleet of aircraft (two turboprops and a Hawker 400XP light business jet), while Yellowstone Club World members have access to three Gulfstream jets at discounted rates for travel to and from the club’s destinations in Mexico, Scotland, Wyoming, Montana and California. Lajitas in remote west Texas offers weekly private jet service from Dallas and Austin. While several communities don’t offer private jet service (yet), they have the next best thing: runways. At Mountain Air in western North Carolina, about 20 percent of the 400 members are pilots, while 300 members of Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, visit via private aircraft.
