Fisherman’s Wharf & Cannery Row

Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey is an aging wooden pier chockablock with souvenir shops, fast food stands, and factory outlets, but it’s also a good place to observe barking sea lions. A footpath leads from the wharf to Cannery Row, immortalized in area legend John Steinbeck’s eponymous 1944 novel. The old tin-roof canneries, while still boasting its share of tourist traps (plastic otters, anyone?), have been upgraded of late.
