It's almost Labor Day weekend, and while summer may be coming to a close, the FedEx Cup is in full swing at the Deutsche Bank Championship. While the PGA Tour descends on the Boston area, locals may want to take the opportunity for a final sand-filled hurrah at seaside getaways like Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, where they can enjoy a pair of the best summer activities: beach and golf.
The beach, or at least the linksland that connects the sea to the mainland, gave birth to golf. So it’s no surprise that there are so many great courses near some of the world’s best beaches, from Clifton Beach in South Africa to Sunset Beach on the New Jersey shore. So if you can’t decide to head for the sand or the green, why not do both?
And depending on how you play, the soothing sound of the surf can help you forget about a bad round, while a nap under an umbrella is a nice way to reflect upon a good one.
We have ranked the following 20 surf and turf destinations based on the combined quality of the beach and golf. And since a day at the beach can involve sand (bunkers) and water (hazards) of a different kind, we have assigned a “Day at the Beach” meter to each course: the more umbrellas, the more fun.
