Mayakoba (El Camaleon)

Centerpiece of the Riviera Maya’s premier resort development, this low-profile course by Greg Norman tiptoes through the jungle, the holes tracing the curve of the property’s limestone canals. The layout, host of a PGA Tour event, makes a chameleon-like transition from dense jungle and mangrove swamp to seaside dunes that shelter a pair of dramatic par threes. Fairways are wide, but approach shots must be accurate—the greens slope off to close-mown hollows and deep bunkers. Water comes into play at 15 holes, while four cenotes (subterranean caverns) also factor in the proceedings, notably on No. 1, a daunting par five with an enormous maw in the heart of its fairway.
