Located 90 minutes north of Los Angeles, this vintage hideaway, long patronized by Hollywood stars, is tucked away in a secluded valley enclosed by soaring 7,000-foot peaks in the Topa Topa Mountains. George C. Thomas, the genius behind Riviera, Bel-Air, and other top L.A. clubs, built a petite but beguiling par-70 layout at Ojai, its rolling fairways flanked by citrus groves and deep barrancas. Spa Ojai, a 31,000-square-foot emporium that resembles a rural Andalusian outpost, has a gurgling fountain, a 50-foot bell tower, and a superb menu of treatments. Portions of the rambling Spanish Colonial-style hotel, accented by white plaster walls and red-tile roofs, date to 1923, with working fireplaces available in many of the guest rooms.
