Founded in 1771 and known simply as the Carmel Mission, this is one of California’s most significant historic sites. Established by Father Junipero Serra, a Franciscan monk, the Carmel Mission inspired the creation of many others throughout the region. Adjoining the restored stone church and tower dome is a lovely garden planted with California poppies and native shrubs.
