San Francisco, Calif.

The fabled “city by the bay” offers one of the nation’s finest urban golf experiences come spring. The city’s top public-access track is TPC Harding Park, its fairways etched across a gently rolling peninsula near the shores of Lake Merced. Recently treated to a $16 million refurbishment and host of the 2009 Presidents Cup, this walker-friendly layout, designed in 1925 by Willie Watson, the man behind Olympic, is framed by tall pines and cypress trees. Also noteworthy: Presidio Golf Course, a historic layout hemmed in by towering eucalyptus trees with fine views of the city skyline; and Lincoln Park Golf Course, a compact, par-68 layout set on a bluff overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.
