Travel Insider: Irish Gathering, Texas Two-Step, Golf & Wine, and more

The leprechauns have been chanting it since the arrival of the New Year: 2013 is the year of The Gathering in Ireland. The Emerald Isle is opening its arms to hundreds of thousands of friends and family from around the world, inviting them to gatherings in villages, towns, and cities, with parties, festivals, concerts, and clan gatherings planned throughout the year. Kildare Hotel, Spa and Country Club in Straffan, a.k.a. The K Club, has responded by organizing The Gathering Golf Classic slated for July 14–18. The 54-hole tournament, open to golfers at all levels, will be contested on the resort’s Palmer Ryder Cup Course, host of the 2006 Ryder Cup; and the Smurfit Course, a newer layout built around numerous water features. The event also includes a practice round. Stay-and-play packages with accommodations at the opulent Kildare Hotel are available, as is a ‘play only’ option.

Through April 30, golfers can “Go Low” with Golf Mesquite Nevada’s Stay-and-Play Packages, which start at $230 per player and feature two nights’ accommodations and two rounds of golf. Located an hour’s drive north of Las Vegas, Mesquite offers all-suite hotels, resort spas, casino action, national parks, and eclectic dining. Choose from seven area golf courses, including top-rated Coyote Springs, Sand Hollow, and Coral Canyon.

Situated along the banks of the Lower Colorado River outside Austin, Texas, Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa showcases Wolfdancer Golf Club, an Arthur Hills-designed course framed by mature oaks, pecans, and cedar elms. The 7,205-yard layout boasts a beautiful Hill Country setting and a memorable riverside finish. The resort’s "Tame the Wolf Golf Package for Two," priced from $375 per night, features deluxe accommodations, daily round of golf for two, complimentary Callaway club rentals, a $25 daily food and beverage credit per person, a 10 percent discount on retail purchases at the golf shop, and other extras. Offer is valid from March 1—May 24.

Stuck in wintry upstate New York and itching to work on your game? Turning Stone Resort Casino’s Golf Dome, a premier year-round golf-training center, provides an indoor, temperature-controlled learning environment for personal practice. Clinics and lessons are available from PGA-certified instructors. Open daily, the Golf Dome has a two-tiered, 40-station hitting area, two practice greens, and a chipping area, plus two full-swing golf simulators (players can access a library of the world’s greatest courses). The Golf Dome also offers a full-service golf shop, professional club fitting, and club repair services.

CordeValle, a Rosewood Resort located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains south of San Jose, Calif., is featuring unlimited golf on its Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed course, a PGA Tour venue, as part of its "Great Golf Getaway Experience." The program includes unlimited golf, golf cart as needed, unlimited use of practice facility, continental breakfast daily, and wine-tasting at Clos LaChance Winery, the resort’s on-property vineyard. Caddie or forecaddie fees are extra. Midweek package rates, available through March 10, start at $385 single occupancy, $425 double occupancy.
