Travel Insider: Doonbeg, Ryder Cup, French Lick, and more

By: Brian McCallen

The Lodge at Doonbeg in County Clare, Ireland, the region’s only five-star luxury coastal resort, is marking its first decade this month with a “10 Year Celebration Package.” The program, starting at $286 per night and available throughout 2012, features a choice of a round of golf on the resort’s Greg Norman-designed links or a rejuvenating treatment at White Horses Spa; early evening cocktail in The Long Room, followed by a five-course dinner; breakfast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean; and surprise birthday gift at check-out. Occupying 400 acres on the crescent-shaped shores of Doughmore Bay and lined with massive, marram grass-covered dunes, The Lodge at Doonberg is owned by Kiawah Partners, the master planner behind Kiawah Island, S.C.

The new Fall Classic? It’s the Ryder Cup, the biennial clash between teams from the U.S. and Europe. This year’s matches will be contested at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, a city known for its culture, cuisine, shopping, and impressive skyline. A four-night 2012 Ryder Cup Package – Chi-Town Special offered by My Golf Concierge features accommodations at the downtown Hyatt Regency Chicago near the Magnificent Mile, Ryder Cup tickets (upgrades available), transportation to Medinah (valid Thursday–Sunday), breakfast daily, welcome celebration, all taxes, and other extras.  Price is $3,150 per person, double occupancy.

French Lick Resort, the recently expanded resort and casino destination in southern Indiana, is promoting a “Golf Fanatics Summer Package” through Oct. 30. The line-up includes two nights’ lodging at the French Lick Springs Hotel or West Baden Springs Hotel, one day of unlimited golf at the Donald Ross Course, and one day of unlimited golf at the Pete Dye Course ($30 forecaddie fee extra). Opened in 2009, the top-rated Pete Dye Course stretches for 8,102 yards across hilltops overlooking Hoosier National Forest. A day of golf on the Valley Links Course, a walkable nine-hole parkland-style layout, is also featured. Package price starts at $649 per person.

Circling Raven Golf Club, the grand-scale course attached to the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel in the northern Idaho Panhandle, is offering golf academy clinics taught by former PGA Tour pro and nationally recognized instructor Brian Mogg on Aug. 17 and Sept. 7. Mogg will teach a half-day school focusing on the short game, full swing, and putting while utilizing video analysis. Each four-hour clinic is priced at $299 and includes unlimited use of the practice facility and a voucher for a free round of golf at Circling Raven, one of the finest courses in the northern Rockies. Participants can add a one-night stay in the resort’s new hotel wing for an additional $100.

The Leaders Club Golf Society, a division of The Leading Hotels of the World, offers valuable perks to globetrotting players in search of new golf adventures. Members enjoy complimentary club rentals, complimentary replay privileges and exclusive access to a Golf Butler for custom tours, tee times, and hotel stays. Among other perks, membership also includes priority registration at the annual “Leaders Club Cup” to be held at the Old Course Hotel in St. Andrews, Scotland.
