Mediterra Completes $17 Million in Renovations
(NAPLES, FL) For private golf communities, it has always been survival of the fittest. Those who don’t continually update, improve, and reinvest soon find themselves dated. The Club at Mediterra, a BoardRoom magazine Distinguished Emerald Club and 10-time Community of the Year winner by the Collier Building Industry Association, has no such worries. They have just completed nearly $17 million in renovations to their two championship golf courses, an expansion of their The Sports Club, and added new tennis and bocce courts. “Mediterra has always been viewed as a trailblazer in Naples,” says Carmen Mauceri, club general manager and chief operating officer. “We are continually evaluating our facilities and amenities to ensure they are meeting our members’ needs.” The two-year project to improve the Tom Fazio-designed North and South courses included replacing irrigation, bunkers, and re-grassing with Platinum TE seashore paspalum. Practice facilities and ranges were also renovated. Additional social and meeting space and a larger fitness center were among the top priorities identified by Sports Club members. $1.5 million went toward doubling the size of the existing fitness center and introduced all new equipment, including a Life Fitness Synrgy system.

(BLUFFTON, SC) Berkeley Hall Club is no stranger to Top 100 lists. One of America's Top 100 Premiere Golf Communities, Berkeley Hall Club has been named among the Top 100 Platinum Clubs of America. And with two signature core golf courses designed by Tom Fazio and an award-winning Golf Learning Center & Practice Facility, the private residential golf community is among the tops for its golf experience. That includes Senior Golf Instructor, Krista Dunton, who has been named among GOLF Magazine’s biennial list of “Top 100 Teachers in America” for 2017-2018. Thanks to the rigorous selection process, this ranking of teachers has become the industry standard. Candidates are selected from nominees submitted by the PGA, LPGA, United States Golf Teachers Federation, top industry executives and GOLF Magazine readers. More than 250 nominations on average are accepted from the country’s 25,000 instruction professionals. Dunton has appeared on the Top 100 Teachers in America list since 2011. “We applaud Krista's outstanding dedication to the game of golf and the exceptional level of talent she brings to our Berkeley Hall golf community,” said Adrian Morris, Berkeley Hall Club general manager and chief operating officer. Record Flooding Leads to Course Renovation
(THE WOODLANDS, TX) Talk about finding the silver lining. Southeast Texas experienced severe flooding last May, causing widespread massive damage. Nowhere was the destruction more evident than along Spring Creek, which saw flood waters rise to record levels. That was bad news for The Club at Carlton Woods. The Club is home to two excellent courses by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio. The Fazio course, which is adjacent to the creek, was struck hard. Over half the course ended up underwater and had heavy structural damage. But instead of wallowing in their misfortune, Carlton Woods saw it as an opportunity to reinvest in the course. Job #1 was bunker renovation, which included reducing overall bunker size from 135,000 square feet to 95,000 square feet, and they began that work just a few months after the flooding. This week they announced the bunker renovation was successfully completed. And, they report, members are already expressing their satisfaction with the project, which has provided a much more aesthetically-pleasing look to the course while staying true to Tom Fazio’s original design.

Back in Playa
(D0MINICAN REPUBLIC) The Caribbean may soon add another high end resort to its collection. Nearly a decade ago, real estate investment firm Dolphin Capital Dolphin Capital acquired land for Playa Grande and was planning on building 400 homes. Instead, in November 2016, the firm sold the property for $150 million to Third Point, a New York-based hedge fund. Third Point, in turn, has entered into a partnership with Discovery Land Company to develop a variety of luxury villas and custom homesites located along the beaches, golf course, cliffside, and Mountain Reserve. The golf course is the Playa Grande Golf Course, originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1995 and recently renovated by his son, Rees Jones. The course features 10 holes along the ocean, including a run from the 14th green to the final putt along cliffs high above the Atlantic. The community already includes the Amanera Resort, an award-winning resort that opened in 2015.
