Long famous for its expansive vistas and larger-than-life golf retreats, Texas has quickly become a great value play for those in search of world-class golf and course-side real estate. And the spectacular views, especially around the scenic South and Southeast regions of the state, are thrown in for good measure.

The lastest gem in the Texas Hill Country is the soon-to-be-unveiled Summit Rock Golf Club at Skywater Over Horseshoe Bay. The 200-acre, par-72 Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course course is divided into two distinct sections—a lower, level playing area and an upper, more rugged terrain. Designed with the natural landscape in mind, existing oak trees play a key role in determining the placement of each hole.
"This piece of land incorporates all of the elements a designer looks for in a golf course—nice vegetation, creeks, streams and variation of terrain," says Jack Nicklaus. The private, 18-hole course will feature a multi-faceted clubhouse and pro shop and is scheduled to open in fall 2008. Upon completion of construction, the course will be owned by Horseshoe Bay Resort, joining the Resort’s three championship Robert Trent Jones Sr. golf courses.
In addition to the new Summit Rock Golf Club, Skywater Over Horseshoe Bay will feature a private community center, fitness center, hiking and biking trails, tennis courts, private neighborhood pools and gardens, and lush Hill Country landscape.
All residents of Skywater will have the opportunity to become members of the Horseshoe Bay resort, which boasts 54 holes of golf, two clubhouses, private airport, fitness center and spa, yacht club with beaches and resort style pool, extensive marina, tennis facility and a multi-million dollar, 18-hole Bermuda grass putting course. Skywater residents will have their resort initiation fees waived, a value of $75,000 per membership.

Exceptional Golf, Remarkable Value...
Down home Texas comfort and scenery are showcased at four South and Southeast Texas golf courses operated by Foresight Golf.
The Bandit Golf Club, scenically set along the Comal River in New Braunfels, opened in 1997 and has long been a favorite for tourists and in-the-know locals. The Buckhorn Golf Course was built in 2000 in the nearby town of Comfort, and true to its city namesake, Buckhorn advertises itself as country cool and comfortable. The Republic Golf Club opened in 2002 and is located in South San Antonio just 10 minutes from famed Riverwalk. And Cypresswood Golf Club, a 54-hole facility just north of Houston, is the newest addition to the Foresight family of great golf courses.

Bentwater on Lake Conroe,
Bentwater.com, e-mail info@bentwater.com, 866-866-8613

Bentwater on Lake Conroe is a 1,400-acre master-planned community nestled between the 22,000-acre Lake Conroe and the 160,000-acre Sam Houston National Forest. Located just north of Houston, Bentwater is close to the city, but with plenty of lakeside country comfort. It’s now the only private, gated waterfront community in Texas to offer three 18-hole championship golf courses.
The newest and most exclusive golf club at Bentwater is the 182-acre, 18-hole Jeffrey Blume-designed Grand Pines Golf Club. An all-green course highlighted by rolling hills, water features and heavily wooded surroundings, Grand Pines was designed in the tradition of America’s classic courses. Paying tribute to the “golden age of golf course design,” the fairways of Grand Pines will be forever free from further development.
Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish designed the first of Bentwater’s three picturesque courses, highlighted by the challenging par-4 12 with its split fairway and the picture-perfect par-4 14th. The second Bentwater course, designed by Scott Miller, follows the natural embankment of Lake Conroe, offering challenging water play. All three courses are anchored by the Bentwater Country Club, complete with additional resort amenities including a yacht club, private marina, fitness club and day spa.
At Bentwater, developers Belin & Associates have created a one-of-a-kind, private, gated community that blends natural beauty with golf resort living. Custom homes and homesites are either surrounded by trees, set on the fringe of a fairway or placed at water’s edge. Having entered the final phases of development, Bentwater has saved the best for last, offering some of the most spectacular golf course, waterfront and island homesites ever available.

San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau
VisitSanAntonio.com, 800-447-3372

Golfing visitors to San Antonio can begin their golf adventure at the Westin LaCantera Resort Course, the final architecture pairing of Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf and current home of the PGA Tour’s Texas Open. While the par-72 layout may host the best golfers in the world for one week, it’s open to all the rest of the year. So is the Arnold Palmer-designed par-71 Palmer Course, located directly across the street.
A day at the Hyatt Hill Country Golf Club is certainly a winning one with three Arthur Hills-designed nine-hole layouts amidst the natural stone creeks and spectacular springtime wildflowers of San Antonio.
Located between the airport and downtown, the par-71 Quarry Golf Course is a must-play. Architect Keith Foster neatly fit the back nine along the natural stone quarry walls of the former Alamo Cement Plant, giving golfers a visual challenge unlike anywhere in Texas.
A few miles north, Canyon Springs Golf Club is built on some of the highest points in San Antonio. The site of a former 1800s trail stop, the course offers some stunning views from tees and greens. Just south of downtown is the historic Pecan Valley Golf Course, site of the 1968 PGA Championship won by Julius Boros. It’s the only major tournament ever held in the San Antonio area.
Of course, no San Antonio golf trip would be complete without a round at city-owned Brackenridge Golf Course, a few miles north of downtown. Designed in 1915 by A.W. Tillinghast, it’s easily the most historic course in the state.
And while the Tournament Players Club (TPC) San Antonio isn’t on the schedule yet, it will be soon with two championship public courses along with a JW Marriott resort scheduled to open by 2010.
